Where to Have Mountain Swimming Adventures in North Wales

North Wales is home to some of the most scenic wild swimming spots in the UK.

Our favourite way to find swim spots is to use Ordnance Survey maps in combination with Google Maps to find likely locations - and then get out there and explore.

Social media will give you the highlights BUT, if a swim spot pops up often in your feed it’s loads more likely that there will be other people there.

We like wild swimming where other people are not.

That said; here are some great locations to try wild swimming in the mountains for the first time.

  • Llyn Idwal – A popular, peaceful, spot surrounded by rugged mountain scenery in the Glyderau mountains.

  • Llyn Llydaw – Nestled on the slopes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), offering breathtaking views and vivid, clear water.

  • Llyn Padarn – A large lake near Llanberis, surrounded by mountains, perfect for a cold, mountainous dip but with coffee and cake near at hand.

  • Llyn Cau – A beautiful glacial lake in the crater of Cadair Idris, 350 meters above the car park, with another 400 meters of mountain towering above you.

  • Llyn Dinas – A picturesque lake near Beddgelert in the shadow of Yr Yr Wyddfa, that has very easy access that’s perfect for beginners.
