Your pre-glamping holiday checklist | The Forge

The Forge Corwen

Is this your first time glamping? Not quite sure what to bring and what you can leave behind? Check out this handy checklist to make the packing so much easier (and save you some space in the car!).

This may be your first glamping experience or maybe you’re a seasoned glamper – but before every break there is always the inevitable stress as you wonder what you’ll really need and what you can do without. Will I need a torch? Will there be a bottle opener? Will I need my phone charger? This helpful checklist will hopefully make the preparation a little less stressful so you can arrive prepared, in control and ready to relaaaaax!

Clothing

You’re going to be outside the whole time you are here so make sure you have enough layers. Lots of thin layers are better than one massive jumper so you can add more or take some off more easily. We recommend merino wool thermals at this time of year if you can get them. If you can get your core nice and toastie with a base layer then you are prepared for anything! It will be your extremities that feel it most when the evenings turn chilly. Most important is a nice warm hat - Sir Ranulph Fiennes famously said, “if your hands are cold, put on a hat”. As we lose most of our heat through our heads you need to keep this warm. A decent wind and waterproof coat, gloves and scarves come next!

DON’T FORGET: lots of light layers, a waterproof coat, a hat, gloves

Footwear

Wellies or walking boots are a good idea. It’s not very muddy but the grass gets very wet so this is the best way to keep your feet try. For super warm toes we also recommend waterproof socks but these are really just nice to haves. For inside the tents, bed socks are a good idea once the temperature drops after dark.

DON’T FORGET: Wellies or walking boots, bed socks

Washing

We’ve got lovely hot showers on site so bring your favourite fluffy towel and smellies for a refreshing outdoor shower experience. We don’t have electricity on site so there’s no point in bringing your hairdryer – far better to march up to the top of the hill fort and let the Welsh wind do the job instead! There are hot water sinks next to the showers and cold running water in every camp kitchen – so where you decide to wash is really up to you – just don’t forget your toothbrush!

DON’T FORGET: a bath towel, toiletries and your toothbrush

Food & Drink

Our camp kitchens have all the crockery, cutlery, pots, pans and utensils you have at home, including real wine glasses, bottle openers and tea towels. There’s tea, coffee, (including decaf) hot chocolate, sugar and milk provided so all you need to bring are your favourite food and drinks. We’ve got a cool box with ice packs to keep your beers and chilled items cold. And there’s a gas hob for cooking and boiling up the singing kettle for a brew.

DON’T FORGET: your favourite food and drink

Campfire cooking

We supply logs, firelighters and the fire circle together with all the campfire cooking equipment including barbecue grill, hot plate and Dutch oven and tripod. We’ve even got the all important tongs – but you’ll have to find your own fire poker from the many sticks lying around in our woodland… And most important of all – don’t forget the marshmallow!

DON’T FORGET: marshmallows!

Technology

We aim to give you the full off-grid experience so there is no electricity on site. We have solar powered phone chargers – you only need to bring your regular USB cable. Of course, if you are coming for a digital detox then you don’t need to worry about any of this 😊.

DON’T FORGET: your phone and USB cable for charging

Entertainment

All of our tents have real beds with linen, cushions, rugs and carpets – we even have hot water bottles for the cooler evenings. There are folding camping chairs for round the fire and a picnic table for eating off. There are head torches, tea light candles and LED lanterns - but you might like to bring some more scented candles to create the mood. We provide playing cards and board games plus a hammock. We’ve even got a selection of books and magazines for you to read while you’re here. You might like to bring some additional games – we’ve seen some very competitive rounders played in the field plus some nice jams and even some dancing round the campfires. We are so far away from everything that you are never going to disturb anyone 😊.

DON’T FORGET: games, musical instruments, Bluetooth speakers, a good book…

My husband and l arrived at The Forge with our three year old, feeling frazzled from our busy public sector jobs and ready for a break. The Forge was exactly what we needed and l can’t recommend it highly enough. The bell tents are spacious and feel more like a smart hotel room. The beds are super comfy, the bedding is luxurious, and having your own private composting toilet is nice. The showers were immaculate and lovely and hot. This really is glamping at its best! The kitchen areas are fully stocked with every utensil you could need and the real coffee and hot chocolate is a lovely touch. The setting is really stunning and the tents are set out in such a way that you feel completely private, the solar powered twinkly lights around the tents are magical. I have fabulous memories of sipping hot chocolate with my little boy watching the sun setting and the cows grazing! Whilst we didn’t elect for the digital detox during our stay, l found l naturally forgot about my smart phone and at end of the holiday l didn’t know where it was!!
