Canoeing, campfires and cosy nights | The Forge

The Forge Corwen

Do I need my own kit? Can I bring the whole family? Will I get cold? Check out our quick Q&A to give you everything you need to know about our Family Canoe and Bushcraft Weekend which we will be hosting at The Forge from 4th – 6th June.

If you fancy joining us you can book here or feel free to give us a call on 01490 412972.

Q. I’ve never done any canoeing before – can I still come?

Yes, of course! Lizzie and Lina have years of experience introducing people to canoeing! The activities we have planned will suit those who have never canoed before, as well as those with experience.

Q. My children are both under 5 and can’t swim – is this going to be a problem?

You are unlikely to fall in, unless you choose to jump in and have a swim! Everyone is supplied with buoyancy aids, so even if you are a non-swimmer, you can still enjoy some water time. Even non-swimming children can enjoy a float.

Q. Do I need to bring any special kit?

No specialist kit required… bring your own waterproofs and ‘outdoor’ clothes and trainers that you don’t mind getting wet. A change of clothes for afterwards, water bottle and sun cream (because you never know, we might get lucky with the weather even in North Wales!)

Q. I’m a single parent with two kids – can I join in?

Of course! We understand that everyone’s family situation is different but that shouldn’t stop you from joining in the fun. There will be plenty of grown ups on hand to help out and are very happy to discuss pricing and accommodation options, so get in touch so we can have a chat.

Q. I’m worried about the Welsh weather and getting cold – how will you manage this?

We will send you a kit list detailing suitable clothing. Canoeing is active so there is no hanging around getting cold. We also have plenty of games and activities to keep you busy. We’ll also manage the session to use sheltered areas of the lake to keep you out the wind.

Q. What exactly is ‘bushcraft’?

Bushcraft is all about using what you have around you to survive and even thrive! On this weekend you’ll be learning all about how to light a fire (without using matches!), how to make a pot hanger so you can make your own hot chocolates and basic knife skills so you can carve your own stick to toast marshmallows.

Q. Can I bring my own tent?

We are keen to give as many people as possible to opportunity to have a go at canoeing and building their confidence with outdoor skills so let us know how we can make this work for you. We are happy to have a chat about pricing and bringing your own tents and/or campervans so do get in touch.

Q. I’m gluten intolerant – can you cater for me?

Yes absolutely! We are very happy to cater for all dietary requirements. We just ask that you let us know 2 weeks in advance so we can make sure that we can source all the necessary alternatives.

Q. Can I bring my dogs?

Give us a ring if you would like to bring your dogs with you so we can have a chat about some things to consider. Blodyn, my Welsh Collie loves canoeing, he has been canoeing since he was a little puppy. However, not all dogs enjoy canoeing, some of them absolutely hate it. If you would like your dog to try canoeing, we can help you introduce them. However, you need a 'plan B’ in case the activity isn’t for them. We recommend that you buy your dog their own buoyancy aid for paddle sport, swimming and playing near water.

Q. Can additional family members come along and watch?

Yes, we are more than happy for other people to come and join us on the shore where we will be holding the bushcraft activities. They are also very welcome to come and join us back at The Forge for some food and relaxation around the campfire in the evenings, and we are very happy to have a chat about the small additional cost for this.
