Ten reasons why you should go on a sensory retreat | The Forge

The Forge Corwen

We are all familiar with our five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste and touch – but have you ever really stopped to think about how each sense changes your perception of the world around you?

We tend to rely more heavily on some senses than others, in fact some sensory observations can seem more difficult to notice, let alone articulate. Most of the time we live our lives completely unaware of how our senses are interpreting the information around us, even though we are unconsciously using our senses in everything we do.

But what happens when you stop and take time out to really tune into what your senses are telling us? This is what a sensory retreat sets out to discover. And it will be different for every single person…

Are you curious to find out what your senses could do for you? Then here are our top ten reasons for joining a sensory retreat…

It will help you to cope with the stresses of your everyday life

You will be guided through lots of fun activities that use gentle movement, breathing techniques and mindfulness to help you to focus on the here and now. There’s nothing strenuous and you don’t need to have any prior experience.

You will be guided by experienced leaders from the USA

Our retreat is being run by Kyle Weaner and Kiki Alba who are based in West Virginia, USA but have spent lots of time around the world learning all the tools and techniques that they will bring to you. Gentle souls with a great sense of fun, there will be laughter, deep bonding and maybe even a few tears as together you explore your senses.

You will learn lots of skills that you can take away with you

All of the exercises you will work through are designed to equip you with your own personal toolbox that you take away with you to draw upon again whenever you need it, depending on the different stresses and challenges you face.

You will leave feeling rested, relaxed and energised

Some of the activities will encourage you to dig deep to consider (and talk about, if you are comfortable to do so) the different lenses and filters that colour your perspective, and how these may limit you from achieving certain things or feeling a certain way. Exploring these will help lighten your load and will engender a greater sense of calm and energy that you will take away with you.

You will never see the world in quite the same way again

This retreat will literally be life changing as you will leave feeling much more aware of yourself and the world around you. It’s the little things that you will notice more, and these in turn help us to get the bigger things in perspective when the going gets tough back in the real world.

You will get to meet some amazing people

You will go through this journey with lots of other open-minded folk who are curious about exploring their world, although potentially from a wide range of different backgrounds. Having 5 fully functioning senses is by no means a pre-requisite to join the retreat – in fact, understanding how the senses function at different levels is all part of the discovery.

There is loads of time to chillout by yourself if you want to

The retreat has been designed to give you lots of downtime so that you can chill out in a hammock with a good book, or take a gentle walk in the stunning Welsh hills near The Forge. None of the activities are mandatory and you can participate as much or as little as you want. Most importantly, taking intentional moments of solitude offer the space to integrate and synthesise everything that you learn.

You get to spend lots of time outside

The retreat is based mainly outside and exploring nature plays a big part in the retreat. You’ll slow down to better notice and appreciate the tiny details in the world all around you, in a way which you haven’t done before.

Someone else does all the cooking and washing up

You get to enjoy some amazing home cooking packed with nourishing, locally-sourced ingredients, many of which have been grown at The Forge or have been foraged from our fields and hedgerows. And best of all – no washing up!

You will get the best sleep of your life

One of the best things about slowing down and focusing on your senses is the impact that will have on your sleep. With no more racing thoughts and to do lists running through your head, plus a healthy dose of fresh air, comfy beds and cosy bedding, you are destined for some seriously good sleep.
